NPR looked around recently and discovered that they're doing a poor job of featuring women commentators and thought leaders to drive the conversations of the day.
Susan Faludi nailed it in her book, "The Terror Dream" where she observed that in the immediate days following 9/11, there was a "regressive fixation on Doris Day womanhood and John Wayne masculinity" in the media. In that world, there was no place for authoritative women.
If we look beyond NPR, women experts in the media are woefully absent.
Roberta, somehow I missed this news from NPR but as an avid listener it doesn't surprise me. In the 70's the mainstream consciously put on the gender lens to look at reality differently. In the past few decades the myth that gender issues have been resolved has been fed by a focus on exceptions that prove the rule. Glad NPR put on the lens and thanks for highlighting it.
It's true --- The only news posts for women seem to be the side line ones and being the weather girl (which is fine, but seriously limiting) --- Very interestng point!
