The Glass Hammer Network

Ok so now we're getting to the juicy part - letting your boss know you're interested in a promotion.

Yes you have to do it.

There are ways to have this conversation. And if you could have been a fly on the wall during some of the earlier promotion conversations I had with bosses during my corporate career you would see that – well, let's just say some ways are less advantageous than others. (Live and learn. Maybe that's why I am so fascinated with this topic - I am always happy to share what I would have liked to have known at the time.)

Having your boss on your side for this effort - positive, at ease, and feeling like you getting promoted is a win for him or her- is crucial to having this happen -- smoothly, with velocity and ease.

We've already talked a bit about starting planning well enough in advance, doing the right research, receiving feedback, ensuring you have delivered on your performance contract and getting into the right mindset.
