The market has been really moving this week and not in a good direction. Firms are getting ready for layoffs as they deal with the repercussions of restructuring compensation to allow for bigger base pay and smaller bonus pay. New regulations are transforming the tone of how business is done.

I suspect right now everyone wants to hunker down and just get their job done in as unobtrusive way as possible.

So the thought of networking at a time like this may seem counter-intuitive – like going into the refrigerator for a diet coke while your house is on fire.
